Spivey's Generalized Recurrence for Bell Numbers

چکیده

This entry defines the Bell numbers [1] as the cardinality of set partitions for a carrier set of given size, and derives Spivey’s generalized recurrence relation for Bell numbers [2] following his elegant and intuitive combinatorial proof. As the set construction for the combinatorial proof requires construction of three intermediate structures, the main difficulty of the formalization is handling the overall combinatorial argument in a structured way. The introduced proof structure allows us to compose the combinatorial argument from its subparts, and supports to keep track how the detailed proof steps are related to the overall argument. To obtain this structure, this entry uses set monad notation for the set construction’s definition, introduces suitable predicates and rules, and follows a repeating structure in its Isar proof.

Extensions of Spivey's Bell Number Formula

We establish an extension of Spivey’s Bell number formula and its associated Bell polynomial extension by using Hsu-Shiue’s generalized Stirling numbers. By means of the extension of Spivey’s Bell number formula we also extend Gould-Quaintance’s new Bell number formulas.

On a New Family of Generalized Stirling and Bell Numbers

A new family of generalized Stirling and Bell numbers is introduced by considering powers (V U)n of the noncommuting variables U, V satisfying UV = V U +hV s. The case s = 0 (and h = 1) corresponds to the conventional Stirling numbers of second kind and Bell numbers. For these generalized Stirling numbers, the recursion relation is given and explicit expressions are derived. Furthermore, they a...

Combinatorial approach to generalized Bell and Stirling numbers and boson normal ordering problem

We consider the numbers arising in the problem of normal ordering of expressions in boson creation a† and annihilation a operators a ,a† =1 . We treat a general form of a boson string a† rnasn . . . a† r2as2 a† r1as1 which is shown to be associated with generalizations of Stirling and Bell numbers. The recurrence relations and closed-form expressions Dobiński-type formulas are obtained for thes...

Linear Recurrence Sequences with Indices in Arithmetic Progression and Their Sums

For an arbitrary homogeneous linear recurrence sequence of order d with constant coe cients, we derive recurrence relations for all subsequences with indices in arithmetic progression. The coe cients of these recurrences are given explicitly in terms of partial Bell polynomials that depend on at most d 1 terms of the generalized Lucas sequence associated with the given recurrence. We also provi...

A simple combinatorial interpretation of certain generalized Bell and Stirling numbers

In a series of papers, P. Blasiak et al. developed a wide-ranging generalization of Bell numbers (and of Stirling numbers of the second kind) that is relevant to the so-called Boson normal ordering problem. They provided a recurrence and, more recently, also offered a (fairly complex) combinatorial interpretation of these numbers. We show that by restricting the numbers somewhat (but still wide...
